Cologne or catching up on the best days of our lifes...- Part 1

G`day,

And another special welcome to my followers: Emily, Josara, Julia, Cord, Dan, Andrew, Scott, Bill and Jan. On my tour to the only four German cities worth having the attribute "big" I arrived at chapter three: Cologne:
Cologne picture taken while crossing the river Rhine through a dirty windshield
Like I have already explained for Berlin, Germans live in apartment buildings but the ones in Cologne are a little smaller than the ones in Berlin but also quite nice architecturewise.

I have been quite lucky as I wasn´t caught in any large traffic jams as it was the weekend when the summer holidays in Northrhine Westphalia ended and I was double lucky that the extraction of two teeth in the morning didn´t affect me too much so I arrived at 4.30pm at my former flatmate Olli. Olli and me actually enjoyed living together so much that we even shared two different flats over the years. We met in 1991 when we both started studying law in Münster. Our first conversation was on Monty Python´s Flying Circus and we even managed to get uphill from there over the years. In 1992 we (Olli, Mark, Stippel and me) moved in a flat for students which was just finished so we were the first to live there. When the last of us moved out there five years later the flat surely looked "lived in". Lots and lots of great stories from that time, stuff for us to reminiscense about whilst drinking beer...

Later that day we visited Olli´s and Mark´s outsourced living room, a pub called "Zum Denkmal"
and played billards...well...Olli won nearly all games as I always managed to sink the eight into the wrong hole..
Olli sorting his balls
Me having another try but I´m just not good enought to win games (apart from soccer) I guess I´ll add billard to the long list of games I am just not able to win...
Olli and me later that evening
Mark and Yvonne joined us later. They have a little boy, David (4 month something) and live opposite to the pub so they are able to take the babyphone with them when they go out drinking. Quite convenient located pub for young parents.
Yvonne and me

Well, we had an awesome evening, the combination of beer and stories from the good old times IS just great. Mark and me were not only flatmates, we were the core of The Holy Chao. Mark drummed, I played the guitar. Btw, before I forget: this is the link to Mark´s current band "the strobosonics" http://www.myspace.com/strobosonics

In the wake of all the brews and some french vodka we eventually reached the "You are my bestest friend"-stage and told many a great tale before we parted. Olli and me continued in his kitchen both the drinking and the drunken conversation. In his kitchen some of the artefacts from our first flat still exist:
An artistic expression of some thoughts on Roman-Catholicism
The decoration of Olli´s fridge, cover of the best German satire magazin "Titanic", translation "What´s the matter with German women? Too stupid to drink!"
The last beer of the day and then we called it a great evening and went to bed...

Part 2 will follow tomorrow as it is just too much to finish tonight and I already hear my bed calling me. Have fun, take care and cya

more old pictures I had forgotten that they still exist...

G`day,

And an extra friendly "How´s it going?" to my followers: Emily, Josara, Julia, Cord, Dan, Andrew, Scott, Bill and Jan. When I told you a month ago that there are no pictures of me between age 14 and 19 I was wrong. The combination of basement and attic cleaning resulted in me finding some pictures I had already forgotten that they existed.
This is me age 14. This picture was taken while I had to sweep our school yard as a punishment for something I did and my teacher took this pics. Please note the ridiculous white socks and the high-water-trousers...
I´m not 100% sure but I guess this pic was taken during our Berlin school trip in 1988. My school mate Michael and me after the shower...
Next school trip 1990 in Italy...I was such an individualistic indicviduum, that was the tie when I showed my individualism by wearing a hat...
Somewhere in Verona...
Julia, who was my closest female friend in High School and me
Our biology teacher Dr. Henning...
Wet...waiting for the bus...
This picture was taken on another school trip to Taize in 1989
Same trip...

Well, that´s it for today. I guess I have posted every embarrassing picture from my past by now but maybe I still find some pics for example hidden in some of my old books...

Have fun, take care and cya...

Best recipe for salmon ever and some thoughts on vegetarians/vegans

G´day,

And another special welcome to Emily, Josara, Julia (yes, you always pay for a good night out but I guess it was worth it), Cord, Dan, Andrew, Scott, Bill (congrats to your first album!) and Jan. Today´s topic is food (the indulgence of) and the connection between catholicism and vegetarism/veganism.

Yesterday evening I had the best salmon I ever had and the way to do it is amazingly simple. You just need salmon, a cookie box (metal), sawdust and a barbie.

First you need to empty the cookie box of it contents and then you punch some holes into the lid:
Then season the salmon with some olive oil, salt and lemon pepper
In the meantime put some sawdust (preferrably 100% wood without artificial stuff) into the box.
My dad used a mixture of this woodshaving stuff people use as litter for rabbits/hamsters and beech tree smoking sawdust and he put some fresh herbs (rosemary and sage) into the mixture.
Cover the whole thing with a grate
put salmon on grate
put lid on box, place box on barbie and fire it up
Wait for ten minutes and no worries if it starts smoking and stinking like a bushfire, ah that reminds me: do this outside or your house will smell bushfirey for the next month or so...

And after ten minutes the salmon looks like this
Awesome stuff
Yes, yes, I know you should drink white whine with fish but a nice Australian Red is always in order...well, what can I say apart from that this was the fucking best salmon I ever had and it´s so simple and quick to do...the only question now is if there are metal cookie boxes in Australia...

This culinary highlight brings me to my next topic. When I phoned with Josara last night we had a discussion on sustainable cooking/ethical eating as she has bought a "Sustainable cooking" cook book and the most sustainable thing to eat are veggies. If you wanna eat sustainable meat and you really take the whole ethical/sustainable eating seriously you would have to get yourself a piglet/baby sheep/calf and raise it in your back yard, using it´s dung to manure your sustainable veggie patch and feed it with sustainable grown grass. And comes the time you get your sustainable knive and apply it in an ethical way on the animal using even the last bit of it as it would be un-ethical to leave any waste. Well, one would need to learn the art of tanning hides and I am still wondering what to do with hoofs and teeth but I guess the hoofs could be ground up and used as fertilizer but no idea what to do with teeth yet.

So (apart from the teeth issue) no worries with sustainable meat but Josara pointed out that she would see a problem eating an animal you cared for for quite some time as you would grow attached to it. Well, call me heartless but personally I wouldn´t have any issues in that area but via that discussion we reached the topic of vegetarianism/veganism and I had a think about these ways of life from a different angle.

Starting with the question: why do I eat meat (and when I come to think about it, why do I eat anything)? Answer: because I like the taste of it. And so I can absolutly see the point that people who don´t like the taste of meat become vegetarians. But honestly I can only think of one vegetarian who has become a vegetarian because she doesn´t like the taste of meat and that´s my Ex-girlfriend Dorit. But I know heaps of vegetarians who don´t eat meat either because "awwww, you can´t eat the oh so cute animals - look at this little lamb with the soulful eyes" or because they don´t agree with the conditions animals are "produced" by the big meat corporations or because they think that animals are the better humans and you should not eat your fellow being.

Well, I have shocked already several of the "animals are too cute to be eaten" persuation when they looked at me triumphantly and said: "You wouldn´t eat an animal if you had to kill it yourself" and I said "Wanna whatch me? Been there, done that. Killed it, ate it. So what?". I sneer at those pseudo-hippies. Being vegetarian only because animals are cute? What a bullshit! If you´d try to apply logic to that kind of conviction it would be ok to eat the meat of ugly animals wouldn´t it?

The next group has a point as the "mass production" of meat in a capitalistic industrial scale has the tendency to minimise the costs at the expense of the well being of the animals. We don´t need to discuss the grievance in this field, they are well known. But again I think becoming a vegetarian doesn´t help at all. It´s like you want to change the game by not playing it anymore. In my opinion if more people would stop buying cheap meat from the big supermarkets and start supporting local ecological farmers, there would be more of them, ergo more animals who lead a happy and species-appropriate life until the get eaten. But if you don´t support alternative ways i.e. ecological/ethical meat because you don´t support meat at all as you are a vegetarian, you can say "I don´t support the big meat industry and their bad ways" but you will not make a change, the only change is in your own conciousness...

The "animals are better humans"-romantics are often not only vegetarian but vegan as they feel that drinking milk would be exploitation of sister cow...and here I can´t follow any more. The first and most obvious logical flaw would be the the afore mentioned "you can´t change a game by quitting" aspect but the whole "animals are better beings" thing is such a childish, idiotic bullshit thinking. Humanising animals is bullshit per se but if you really have a close look at nature it´s just sex and violence and survival of the fittest and so on. I would like to see a P.E.T.A. activist explain to me why animals are the better creatures so I could even begin to understand that weird thinking.

So let´s sum up the reasons for being a vegetarian/vegan:

a) because of emotional issues as amials are cute
b) because you don´t want to support a system that is wrong

Now let´s sum that up, too: GUILT

A vegetarian/vegan feels guilty for depriving animals of their right to live on or in the case of vegans even feel guilty of exploiting animals.

In order to not feeling guilty they deny themself the pleasure the world of cookery holds and that reminds me curiously of this large religious organisation which operates by planting guilt into their members so that they deny themself the pleasures the world offers, the catholic church.

But even the religious nutcase of the catholic church think in their delusion that they will get a reward for all the denial after they are dead, vegans and vegetarians don´t even get rewarded for their denial.

Well, I think life is just too short to ruin it by riding the guilt trip and if it comes to that life is also too short for not eating stuff that you like.

And one last word in the direction of vegans: ever wondered if plants have a right to live, too? Science as shown that plants react to all kind of stimuli so who are we to draw the line at animals, eh? If you really want to make a difference, try not to eat at all, just to be on the safe side. In about six weeks the whole vegan movement would be history.

And now the final thought, science is already able to genetically engineer meat from cells. So I like to imagine the reactions of all the vegetarians to synthetic meat. Surely there is no ethical/philosophical reason not to eat that as no animal has been harmed in the production of it. Will you just construct another weird chain of "logic" to justify why it´s wrong to eat meat or will a large number of vegetarians just change their reason for vegetarism to the reason my Ex-girlfriend has for not eating meat: "I just don´t like the taste of it" ?

That´s all for today and just to make it clear to my vegetarian friends, yes I like you as you are (especially Jimmy and Kathy) and I don´t have the desire to convert you into carnivors but I still think you are missing out on a good thing...

Have fun, take care and cya

Berlin

G´day,

And another personal "Hi, how´s t going?" to my congregation: Hello Emily (get well soon and don´t eat everything people dish for yo), Josara, Julia, Cord, Daniel, Andrew, Scott, Bill and Jan.

Well, as you might have recognised from the view, I´ve been to Berlin last weekend, visiting one of my oldest friends Heiner.
This are Heiner and me in 1993
And this is us 16 years later...still in love...

I had planned to stay from Friday night until Sunday but I kind of forgot the black-holish quality of Heiner´s kitchen...well first of all Berlin: the only real BIG city in Germany approx. 4 Mio inhabitants so it´s around the same size as Melborne but only populationwise. If you compare the area of both cities I´d reckon that Melbourne would be more than 20 times bigger. Melbournians live in small houses with front and back yards and Berlinians live in 6 or 7 storey buildings housing approx 60 parties. Typical Berlinian architecture is a six storey house with an inner courtyard...
View from the roof of Heiner´s house into the courtyard...
Jup and there is even greenery in there...
The houses in Berlin have been renovated...when I was in this part of Berlin for the first time in 1987 when it was still East Germany the houses looked all grey and ugly as noone cared for them but since West Germany won the cold war and took the poor little socialist county over and showed them the blessings of capitalism at least the houses became prettier (and around 2500% more expensive!).
This is how all the houses looked before the West took over...
Berlin street view
They are still working and renovating, in the background you can see the tower at the Alexander Platz...
another view from Heiner´s roof...this is Bornholmer Strasse
more Berlin from above
Stairway to heaven...
One of the few sign that this was East Germany...
And it was summer...

View from Heiner´s kitchen window...I love Heiner´s kitchen which is a little like a black hole. Once I get inside it´s gravity, it´s nearly impossible to leave...
well...drinking all that beer didn´t make it easier to leave but, hey I have no idea when I´ll be there next time...so I also took some pictures of some icons of Heiner´s flat which were there since 1992...
"Who will help us to set fire to this Libanese"
Seyfried (famous German cartoonist from the 80ies)
I recall how long we searched for a copy shop with a colour copy thingy to make a larger print of this Pink Floyd postcard in 93...
The banana poster on the toilet...

Well instead of leaving Sunday noon as I intended I left of Thuesday by train...
Berlin main station, you can see the Reichstag in the background...

I can only say it was fun and I look forward to see Heiner next time at my place...

That´s all for today, have fun, take care and cya

Re-discovery of my past (the best bits in a certain way...)

G´day,

And another special welcome to my congregation, Hello Emily, Josara, Julia, Cord, Daniel, Andrew, Scott, Bill and Jan. Much has happened since I updated the blog last time and I somehow lacked the passion for blogging but now is a special time and I feel like telling you about the delight of listening to an album my band The Holy Chao has done in 1997 and I haven´t listened to it for a decade.

When I came back to Germany I have re-discovered our first CD release but I didn´t have the chance to listen to our first release "Use your Confusion" as my copys had drowned during the first flood of my parents basement in 1999 when I was in Bolivia and had all my stuff stored there...And finally my friend Mark (our dummer) has sent me a copy of one the only still existing six original CDs and I have uploaded the six songs on my iPod and then: fuck, yeah! While I write this, I listen to it for the second time, ok, it´s the sixth time with one of the songs that was always my favorite song of our´s, and it´s just plain fucking awesome...

I´m not sure if a non-musician can understand this but, well, if you have ever produced your first album with all your heart-blood and then you kind of neglected it as you have produced more albums, better produced and wrote much more sophisticated songs and stuff and then you listen to your firstborn 12 years after you´ve made it and a fucking long time after you have listened to it for the last time, it IS most fucking awesome, unbeliveable so...

During the first listening I heard all the mistakes, all the little errors in the production, the roughness of the whole thing, the edgy songwriting, all the stuff we learned to avoid in the second CD but quite fast I felt the underlying emotionality of the whole thing. I have no idea if someone who hasn´t witnessed this time personally would hear those differences...this CD is our pure heartblood, the quintessence of our early time from 1995 to 1997...the first songs we did when we had eventually completed out line-up.

It´s really interesting what kind of memories bubbled up with this stuff, o.k. I guess the fact that I also sorted the boxes with my old stuff from basement and attic also helped but interesting it is all the same...but back to the songs: there are four songs I have not uploaded to our facebook page and I even don´t know how they are all called I have to admit...schame on me but I intend to find out the one song I can´t name now...

On this album is my favorite song of all times by us: "104" (if I don´t confuse it with another song title). I always loved it the most to play live as it´s easy to play, has a awsome dynamic and I just adore the lyrics by Marc, our singer and he sings it like a cry from his very soul...fucking hell...now I listen to it for the 7th time and it´s just great, pure and simple and if you think otherwise, well, I don´t mind, can sit on your thumb and rotate for all I care, mate! The whole album is emotion pure and this song tops it all...and it was so much fun to perform it as it didn´t involve any complicated riffs, tempi changes or other stuff you have to concentrate for...

Well I´ll upload the songs during the next days onto our facebook page and then I write a little more about them as that´s the place where it has to go, not this blog but it´s quite funny how this experience opens a window into my past when dreams that have long died, brutally slain by reality, were still happyly blossoming and I was a different person in many regards. I don´t want to go back, mind you, I am quite glad that some dreams are dead and burried and I have developed to become the person I am now but to re-visit this time has a special magic. Between my early and late twenties life was fun! Life still is fun but at that time it had a certain carefreeness if you know what I mean and I´m pretty sure that you do.

I´m still not sure what I should think about my lyrics but to tell you the truth even though I was proud of them I was never really convinced that they are good. For me they certainly hold an insight into my younger self. I guess they are just too personal, too much out of my soul for me to face someone who doesn´t like them and would tell me they sound like written by a 14 year old. Well, I guess I have to overcome author´s vanity and fatherpride at one point but as most of them are still underage I can give me another year or two before I let go of my children...

But hearing Marc sing my words and give them interpretation and meaning is awesome, we fuckin WERE a great band, hell yeah!

That´s all for tonight, will continue sitting on the back porch and watch the full moon, drinking beer, smoking some of the 10-year old herbs that I found on the attic and have a 4th listen to "Use your Confusion". Take care, have fun, cya

German Summer and relics from the past....

G´day,

And a special welcome to my congregation, Hi Emm, Josara, Julia, Cord, Daniel, Andrew, Scott, Bill and Jan. Today I´ll show you a video of this year´s summer...typical German summer by the way...

Over the last days I have been on our attic and after I found lots of funny stuff from the past in the basement I found lots of even funnier stuff on the attic...
What I really like about being in Germany is that even though the attic is full of spiderwebs (and I mean really covered in them) you don´t have to worry about the spiders here. Love it. I guess in Australia I wouldn´t have entered the attic just like that...
This is my granddad´s old typewriter from 1926...with care, soapy water and lot´s of WD40 I cleaned it and all parts are working again...it´s now available on eBay so if anyone is interested just contact me (international shipping costs: approx. Aus$ 150)

Well, apart from the tywriter I found boxes with old schoolstuff of mine, boxes of letters from my sister (he he he...) and some traces from the time I used the attic to dry certain plants I grew in my parents garden when I was younger.

When I had a look at my old school folders containing old school tests from high school I had a good laugh. Like all kids I voiced my general opinions on life, the universe and everything with big black markers on the folder. My favorite quote from that time: "I don´t know you bt I hate you never the less"....haha I was a little sunshine when I was young...

Ok, that´s all for today, have a great one, take care and cya later
